Why a Housing Lottery?
A Housing Lottery is being created because HACG anticipates receiving more applications than the number of public housing units that will be available from November 1, 2025, to October 31, 2027.
The lottery will help ensure equitable access to the limited number of public housing unit opportunities due to the anticipated demand exceeding availability.
How The Housing Lotteries Work:
Purpose: To prioritize housing placement in a fair and random manner when it is anticipated that there will be more applicants than available public housing units to become available from November 1, 2025, to October 31, 2027. A lottery will be held for 2-bedroom units if the HACG receives more than 400 applications. A lottery will be held for 3-bedroom units if the HACG receives more than 400 applications. A lottery will be held for 4-bedroom units if HACG receives more than 100 applications.
Drawing:
Applications will be randomly drawn in a public forum, and applicants will be placed on the waiting list in the order of the drawing. If needed, the lottery will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, October 16, 2025, in the HACG Multipurpose room at 1103 Broad Street, Greenville, NC. The lottery drawing is open to the public. If your number is not selected, you must reapply for public housing when the waiting list reopens.
How hard is it to win the public housing lottery?
There is some element of luck involved. Each bedroom size might have hundreds of applications. To keep things fair, each applicant is randomly assigned a number; the lower the number, the better the odds of getting on the waiting list.
Eligibility Requirements:
Applicants must meet income and asset limits, household size requirements, and other specified criteria. HACG will refer to the following standards in determining the appropriate unit bedroom size for a family:
BEDROOM SIZE | MINIMUM # OF PERSONS | MAXIMUM # OF PERSONS |
2 | 2 | 4 |
3 | 3 | 6 |
4 | 4 | 8 |
FY 2025 INCOME LIMITS BY FAMILY SIZE
# OF PERSONS IN FAMILY | MINIMUM INCOME LIMIT | MAXIMUM INCOME LIMIT |
2 | $0 | $52,600 |
3 | $0 | $59,150 |
4 | $0 | $65,700 |
5 | $0 | $71,000 |
6 | $0 | $76,250 |
7 | $0 | $81,500 |
8 | $0 | $86,750 |
